Four conmen who decamped with Rs 3.2 mln from a land customer arrested

Police have arrested four individuals on the charge of defrauding a woman of Rs 3.2 million by promising her a piece of land at a low price.

The arrested are Rajesh Shrestha, 39, of Deurali Rural Municipality, Ramechhap, currently staying at Bhaktapur, Janak Regmi, 52, of Miklajung, Panchthar, currently staying at Kathmandu. Similarly, police rounded up Rana Bahadur Pokharel, 55, of Belbari-6, Morang, currently staying in Jhapa, and Bijaya Rai, 52, of Kamal Rural Municipality-5, Jhapa on Friday.

On April 13, they took the customer into confidence by telling her that two Kattha-land was on sale for a cheap price at Arjundhara Municipality-11.

After they ran away with the money, the victim informed the local Area Police Office, in Anarmani Jhapa. A police team was deployed from Anarmani. The police received information that the two absconded with the money and went to Ilam.

Jhapa Police Chief SP Durga Raj Regmi informed that they were arrested from Deurali Hotel based at the Old Bus Park of Ilam on Friday in coordination with the District Police Office, Ilam.

At first, Rai and Pokharel had orchestrated a plan. Rai, who was the neighbor of Bishnu Maya Sapkota, had told her about the two kattha-land at Arjundhara Municipality-11 near Bus Park.

He had told her that he would arrange the land at a cheap price.

After Bishnu Maya agreed to procure the land, Rai on April 11 called Rajesh Shrestha and Janak Regmi to Jhapa.

After that Rai, Regmi, Pokharel, and Shrestha gathered at Arjundhara and hatched a plan to cheat Bishnu Maya.

Bishnu Maya along with her neighbor Dambar Bahadur Bishwakarma went to Nawajyoti Hotel with the amount of Rs 3.2 million. They took Rs 3.2 million from Bishnu Maya and absconded without giving her an agreement paper.
