
KATHMANDU: Nepal recorded more than 7,500 disaster incidents over the past year directly impacting 13,504 households across the country, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
The authority reported a total of 7,547 disaster events between April 14, 2025 and April 7, 2026 resulting in significant loss of lives and property. The disasters included landslides, heavy rainfall, lightning, forest fires, storms, avalanches and wild animal attacks.
Fire incidents were the most frequent with 3,652 cases recorded during the period. These incidents left 563 people injured and directly affected 4,182 households. In one tragic case an entire family of four lost their lives in a fire.
Floods and inundation accounted for 328 incidents, claiming 39 lives, leaving 27 people missing and injuring 14 others. Landslides were also deadly with 76 people killed in 621 incidents.
Similarly, heavy rainfall related incidents caused 7 deaths and injured 20 individuals. Lightning strikes, recorded in 419 incidents, killed 48 people and injured 312 affecting 522 households.
In addition, the NDRRMA reported 477 storm incidents, 324 forest fires, 509 wild animal attacks and 131 cases of altitude sickness over the past year.
The data highlights Nepal’s high vulnerability to natural disasters, posing ongoing challenges to disaster preparedness and response efforts.
