Another clash between meterbyaj victims and police in Kathmandu

Kathmandu : The meterbyaj victims protesting in Kathmandu clashed with the police at Ratna Park of Kathmandu on Monday.

Although the protest of a group of people defrauded by local loan sharks ended after the government signed a five-point agreement with the group on April 1 and the government has already established an investigation commission, another group has come to the capital, saying the agreement was not sufficient.

At least five protesters have been injured in the clash, according to a leader.

The clash ensued as the law enforcers tried to suppress the demonstrations with batons and water cannons. Reportedly, they were trying to go towards Singhadarbar, the administrative complex of the federal government which has been declared a no-protest zone.

On April 7 also, the police detained some meterbyaj victims who were staging a protest in front of Singhadarbar.

Loan shark victims, mainly from districts of the southern plains, say local loan sharks have been duping them of millions of rupees in compound interests calculated in an unfair system locally known as the meterbyaj.
