Sarlahi’s Barahathawa tense; one killed in police firing

Kathmandu : Aperson has died in a clash with police during a protest at Barahathawa Municipality-6 in Sarlahi district on Friday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Jaya Shankar Sah of Barahathwa Municipality-6, said the District Police Office, Sarlahi. Critically injured Sah who was rushed to a hospital breathed his last in the course of treatment.

 Locals had staged a demonstration burning tyres on the road after Barahathwa Municipality decided to hand over a primary health center to the Madhesh Province government.

Police fired 19 rounds of tear gas shells and 13 rounds of shots into air to bring the situation under control. 

Police said they resorted to firing after irate locals picketed the house of Mayor Kalpana Katwal and tried to set fire to it. They have also set ablaze a vehicle parked on the premises of the house.
