Dhaka : Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has resigned and left for a safer place as thousands of anti-government protestors stormed the official residence of the prime minister in the capital city, Dhaka on Monday.

“Hasina resigned earlier today, and fled the country. It is believed she is headed for India, but that has yet to be confirmed,” BBC reported.

This comes a day after clashes between police and protesters left at least 90 people dead in Bangladesh.

Video footage released by BBC shows the protestors entering into the official residence of Prime Minister Hasina in the capital Dhaka, despite a curfew and internet clampdown, and looting, chairs, sofa sets, whatever available. They are celebrating their victory as the Prime Minister stepped down and sneaked into a safer place.

However, it is not confirmed about her whereabouts. According to a BBC correspondent, she has presumably left for India on a helicopter with her sister as it was seen flying toward India.

The student protest, which initially began in July with calls to abolish civil service job quotas, spiralled into demands for Hasina to quit after over two decades.

At least 280 people were killed and hundreds more sustained injuries in clashes between security personnel and protestors in the last two weeks, with around 100 deaths on Sunday alone.

The movement is being led by college students what they call a “Civil Disobedience”.

The bloodshed is some of the worst the South Asian country has seen since it came into being in 1971.
