Staff Reporter Aug 29, 2024

Kathmandu : President Ramchandra Paudel has authenticated the Disappeared Persons Inquiry and Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Third Amendment Bill), 2081 on Thursday.

The bill was sent to Shital Niwas for authentication after being endorsed by both the houses of the Federal Parliament.

The bill, approved by the House of Representatives (August 14) and by the National Assembly (August 22), was authenticated by Speaker Devraj Ghimire on August 28 and subsequently forwarded to Shital Niwas.

The parliamentary committee’s task force, representing the three main parties, drafted the bill. This followed a 17-month backlog in the House of Representatives, where the bill was initially introduced on March 9, 2023.

According to the bill, the tenure of the officials of the Enforced Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be four years.

An arrangement has been made in such a way that the tenure will be extended if the task is not completed within the initially stipulated four years.

Once the work of transitional justice is over, the government will formally declare the peace process logically concluded.
