Staff Reporter Dec 26, 2024

Kathmandu : An earthquake has struck with its epicenter in Jajarkot on Thursday morning.

The National Seismological Center, Lainchaur reported that an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck at 6:33 am with its epicenter near Nayakwada in Jajarkot. The tremors were also felt in surrounding districts.

Earlier, an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Bajura district with its epicenter at Gotri in Jagannanth Rural Municipality on December 21.

Nepal lies in a fault zone as the Indian plate is constantly pushing against the Eurasian (Tibetan) plate, resulting in seismic activities in the Himalayan country, said Geographer Ganesh Kumar Jimee.

Jimee further said Nepal lies between the two tectonic plates — Indian plate and the Eurasian Plate — and their constant push against each other is creating energy. When the energy gets accumulated and strained, it releases in the form of seismic waves.
