Kathmandu: Dr. Badri Rizal has been elected as the new president of the Nepal Medical Association NMA, securing 3,196 votes in the vote count concluded on Tuesday. He defeated his closest rival Dr. Mangal Rawal, who garnered 2,940 votes while another candidate Dr. Narayan Prasad Bhusal received 869 votes.

The election results indicate a clear dominance of Dr. Rizal’s panel in the association’s leadership. Candidates from his group secured key positions, including senior vice president, general secretary and treasurer.

Dr. Sanjeev Tiwari was elected senior vice president with 3,036 votes, defeating Dr. Kirtipal Subedi 2,302 votes and Dr. Ajay Kumar Mishra 1,421 votes.

For the post of general secretary, Dr. Bishwaraj Dawadi emerged victorious with 2,722 votes, ahead of Dr. Kalusingh Khatri 2,423 votes and Dr. Amrit Bhusal 1,646 votes.

Similarly, Dr. Sanyukta Acharya was elected treasurer with 3,186 votes, defeating Dr. Chandani Jaiswal 2,099 votes and Dr. Binod Kumar Mahaseth 974 votes.

In the 19 member executive committee, Dr. Rizal’s panel secured a majority. From his side, Dr. Rakesh Sah, Dr. Susmit Kafle and Dr. Bina Shrestha were elected as members. From Dr. Rawal’s panel, Dr. Amit Jha and Dr. Palpasa Shrestha were elected, while Dr. Sheshraj Ghimire from Team Reform also secured a position.

At the provincial level, Rizal’s panel showed strong performance, winning in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces. Meanwhile, candidates aligned with Rawal secured victories in Gandaki and Karnali.

The overall outcome is seen as a signal of potential shifts in policy priorities and leadership direction within the NMA under its new leadership.
