Under the campaign, a series of cultural, social and indigenous activities will now be organized every Saturday in the Asan area. Officials have also announced plans to expand the program to Ward No. 25 and other locations in the future.
KATHMANDU: A heritage revival campaign aimed at restoring the originality and cultural identity of the historic Asan area has officially begun on Sunday. The initiative was inaugurated at Asan Dabali by Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol.
Prior to the inauguration, a cultural procession featuring traditional music and performances was held from Kamalachi (near Durbar High School) to Asan, extending through Bhotahiti and Mahabouddha Stupa to Kel Tole. The procession saw participation from 13 local guthis and traditional music and cultural groups, showcasing indigenous performances.

Speaking at the event, Dangol emphasized that Asan is not just a settlement but a living symbol of Kathmandu’s history, culture and identity. She highlighted the need for active community participation to preserve its originality and promote a pedestrian friendly, child friendly and elderly friendly urban environment.

Ashaman Sangat, Coordinator of the Heritage and Tourism Committee said such initiatives are vital for sustaining Newar civilization and traditions, stressing that cultural preservation must be practiced in everyday life rather than just documented.
Ward Chairperson Yogesh Kumar Khadgi expressed confidence that the campaign would succeed with active involvement from local guthis, clubs, organizations and youth groups.
The program will include exhibitions of traditional skills and knowledge, promotion of indigenous trade practices and performances of local music and dance. Authorities believe the initiative will also contribute to boosting local livelihoods.

Traffic restrictions have been imposed in various parts of the Asan area during the program. Visitors have been advised to use designated parking areas, including Dharahara underground parking, Jamal Bahal and Durbar High School premises and to follow alternative routes.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City expects the campaign to help preserve the city’s cultural heritage, promote traditional lifestyles and ensure intergenerational transfer of knowledge and practices.
