Kathmandu: Nepal’s dream of a direct spot in the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier is slipping away. The national men’s cricket team has lost four matches in a row on their European tour and they returned from the Netherlands without a single point to show for it.

The pain was clearest in two matches, a heartbreaking 3 run loss to Namibia, followed by a bruising 57 run defeat to the Netherlands in the final game of the series.

The Crucial Standings Drop

Nepal did not even need to play this week to lose ground. While the team sat out, Canada and the UAE played a rain hit match that ended with no result. That gave Canada a single point but it was enough to push Canada above Nepal in the table.

Only the top four teams get direct passage to the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier. Nepal now sits outside that group in 7th place.

What Went Wrong?

Cricket experts say Nepal struggled in both batting and bowling, especially during the death overs. The team’s old problem, a shaky top order, showed up again under the cloudy Dutch skies.

The bowlers had some bright moments but the batters could not chase down even modest totals under 230 runs. Match after match, Nepal fell short at the finish line.

The Road Ahead: Can Nepal Still Qualify?

A top 4 finish through the normal route now looks very unlikely. But Nepal still has paths open to reach the World Cup:

The League 2 Miracle: Nepal must win every match left on their schedule starting with an away triangular series in Oman this October against the hosts and Canada. On top of that, they would need Namibia and Canada to lose points elsewhere. It is a tough ask but not impossible on paper.

The Repechage Route: If Nepal finishes in the bottom four (5th to 8th), they drop into the ICC CWC Qualifier Play off. There, they would face strong teams from the Challenge League and only a top finish in that play off would earn them a back door ticket into the 10 team World Cup Qualifier.

Protecting ODI Status: Nepal must stay ahead even without qualification in sight. Finishing at least 6th would keep their official ODI status safe for the years ahead, a smaller goal but still an important one.
