Kathmandu, Sept 17 — Nearly NPR 51.5 million and around 18 kg of gold were looted from Rastriya Banijya Bank’s Baneshwor branch during the Bhadra 24 protests, officials confirmed.
The stolen gold was kept as collateral against loans but is insured, the bank said. Gold stored in customers’ lockers remains safe.
According to Nepal Rastra Bank, 68 bank branches and counters and 69 ATMs were vandalized or set ablaze across the country, though most suffered only minor damage such as broken windows. The central bank is still collecting detailed data on total losses.
