KATHMANDU: Eight student organizations have filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court challenging the government’s decision to abolish student unions and organizations in universities.
The petition, filed on Friday, seeks an interim order to prevent the implementation of the government’s decision, arguing that the move is unconstitutional and arbitrary.
The student groups stated that the right to associate with organizations based on ideology and beliefs is guaranteed by Nepal’s Constitution. They claimed that dissolving student organizations violates democratic rights and undermines freedom of association.
The petition names the Government of Nepal, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Home Affairs as defendants.
Organizations involved in filing the writ include ANNFSU, ANNFSU Revolutionary, Akhil Sixth, Akhil Socialist, Scientific Socialist Student Organization and Janapakshiya Student Union, among others.
