KATHMANDU: A 26 year old lawmaker from Dhanusha Ruby Kumari Thakur is set to be elected Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives after securing strong cross party backing.

The Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in supporting Thakur’s candidacy. The decision was confirmed by NCP Chief Whip Yubaraj Dulal.

Thakur, a proportional representation lawmaker from the Shram Sanskriti Party led by Harka Sampang has garnered significant parliamentary support. According to party figures 182 lawmakers from the RSP, 17 from the NCP and seven from her own party have backed her bid.

With this level of support she has already secured more than a two thirds majority in parliament, effectively ensuring her election to the post.

Her appointment would mark a notable moment as she represents a Madhesi Janajati group under the proportional representation system.

The formal election is now seen as a procedural step with her victory widely considered certain.
