KHOTANG: The Mundum Trail, listed among Nepal’s top 100 tourist destinations, has witnessed a rise in tourist arrivals this spring as hills along the trekking route burst into vibrant rhododendron blooms.

The trail, which begins from Tawabhanjyang in Sakela Rural Municipality-3, is currently covered with red, white and pink rhododendron flowers, creating a spectacular landscape that is attracting both domestic and international trekkers.

Local residents say the seasonal bloom has significantly boosted tourism activities in the region. Trekkers visiting the area have described the trail as breathtaking, with colourful forests and expansive meadows adding to its appeal.

A recent trekking group led by Ojan Babu Acharya from Diktel said the route offered a mesmerising experience, while many visitors have been sharing photos and videos of the blooming hills on social media, helping promote the destination further.

Apart from its scenic beauty, the Mundum Trail is known for its biodiversity and cultural heritage. Researchers have identified 18 species of rhododendron around the Maiyung meadow area. The trail is also home to wildlife including red panda, Himalayan tahr and a variety of bird species.

The region reflects the traditional highland grazing lifestyle, where herders take sheep, yaks and horses to alpine pastures during warmer months.

Deeply linked with Kirat civilisation, the trail derives its name from “Mundum,” the sacred scripture of the Kirat community.

Stretching across Khotang and Bhojpur districts, the trekking route connects major attractions including Temke Maiyung, Salpapokhari and Silichung. Completing the full trail generally takes between 10 and 13 days.
