Washington: Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s much publicized military initiative, “Project Freedom,” in the Strait of Hormuz reportedly collapsed within just one day after Saudi Arabia denied the use of its airspace and military bases.
While Trump had earlier claimed that the operation was paused at Pakistan’s request amid ongoing diplomatic negotiations, fresh reports released Thursday suggest the real reason behind the abrupt suspension was Saudi Arabia’s refusal to cooperate.
According to NBC News, Saudi authorities declined permission for American military aircraft to access Saudi airspace and airbases, leaving Washington unable to effectively continue the mission.
The report further states that several Gulf allies were displeased after Trump unexpectedly announced the military operation through social media without prior coordination.
Trump reportedly held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in an effort to secure support, but no agreement was reached.
Sources said the U.S. Navy managed to safely escort only three ships through the Strait of Hormuz within two days before the operation stalled.
Military analysts noted that any large scale U.S. operation in the Hormuz region heavily depends on logistical and operational support from regional allies including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, and Oman.
Without access to regional airspace and bases, the deployment of fighter jets, refueling tankers, and support aircraft becomes significantly more difficult.
The United States had launched “Project Freedom” on May 4 with the stated objective of ensuring safe maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the operation was suspended within a day following mounting regional resistance.
