KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists FNJ organized a rally on Saturday to mark World Press Freedom Day, stressing that a free press is a fundamental human right essential for democracy and development.

The rally, held under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Safety,” started from Maitighar Mandala and concluded with a corner meeting in the New Baneshwor area.

Participants, including journalists, rights activists and civil society members, called for the protection of press freedom and the safety of media professionals.

On the occasion, National Human Rights Commission member Manoj Duwadi unveiled the Commission’s annual report on the status of press freedom in Nepal.

He emphasized that press freedom and freedom of expression are integral components of human rights and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting these rights.

The FNJ has been raising concerns over increasing incidents of press freedom violations, urging authorities to ensure a safe and enabling environment for journalists across the country.
