KATHMANDU: A compelling clash is in store in the Indian Premier League as Gujarat Titans take on Punjab Kings, with both sides evenly matched and eager to gain momentum.
The head to head record underlines the balance between the teams: six meetings so far have produced three wins apiece, adding further intrigue to today’s encounter.
Gujarat Titans, champions in 2022, secured their maiden title under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, whose captaincy proved instrumental in shaping the side’s early success.
Much of the spotlight this time will fall on the two captains Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill. Iyer has built a reputation for guiding teams deep into tournaments, having led two different sides to finals in recent years, including one title-winning campaign. Gill, meanwhile, has been among the most prolific run-scorers in the IPL since 2020, playing a central role in Gujarat’s title win in 2022 and their run to the 2023 final.
Their individual numbers from the 2025 season highlight their quality. Iyer amassed 604 runs at a strike rate of 175, while Gill scored 650 runs at a strike rate of 155.87. Despite such performances, both players have struggled to replicate that form in recent T20 internationals.
Gill has faced stiff competition for a place in India’s T20 side from aggressive batters such as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. Since IPL 2025, he has played 15 T20 internationals without registering a half-century.
Iyer, on the other hand, has not featured in any T20 internationals since the 2025 IPL final, due to a combination of injury and limited opportunities in India’s middle order.
Even so, neither player has much left to prove in terms of ability. Their records speak for themselves. For both Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings, hopes will rest on their captains rediscovering top form and leading from the front.
Today’s match could influence more than just the points table it may also signal a return to form for two of India’s most accomplished batters.
