Kathmandu: Work is moving ahead rapidly to transform Kathmandu’s Tundikhel into a greener and better managed public space.
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has launched a grassland development and urban greenery promotion project across an area of around 61,263 square meters on the southern side of the military pavilion at Tundikhel.
According to the metropolis, the land will be leveled and covered with three inches of fertile soil before planting Bermuda grass across the area.
The estimated cost of the project stands at around Rs 42.5 million, while the construction contract has been awarded for Rs 27 million. The project is targeted for completion by mid January 2027 (end of Poush 2083 BS).
As part of the greening initiative, borewells will be constructed at the four corners of Tundikhel along with water management systems and water recharge pits to support rainwater harvesting and groundwater replenishment.
The metropolis has clarified that no permanent structures will be built within the Tundikhel area, stating that the space will remain open and accessible for public use.
Officials say the project aims to reduce dust and muddy conditions while creating a more comfortable environment for recreation, exercise, sports activities, and public gatherings.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City also noted that some activities in the area could face temporary disruption during the construction period, though the nearby Khula Manch area can be used as an alternative venue.
