KATHMANDU: China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Monday renewed a yellow alert for rainstorms and a blue alert for the country’s 19th typhoon of the year, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across several regions.

From 8 am Monday to 8 am Tuesday, torrential rain is forecast in parts of Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Taiwan, Hainan, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Yunnan, Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang, the NMC said.

Southeastern Zhejiang, eastern coastal Fujian, northern Guangdong, most parts of Taiwan Island and eastern Liaoning are expected to experience particularly heavy rainfall. Some areas of Taiwan could receive 250 to 300 millimeters of rain.

The affected areas may also experience short-duration intense rainfall, with hourly precipitation reaching 20 to 50 millimeters, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Meanwhile, the year’s 19th typhoon was located in the Beibu Gulf at 5 am Monday, about 185 kilometers southwest of Beihai City in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Maximum winds near its center were recorded at 23 meters per second.

The typhoon is expected to move eastward from Monday night before turning northward at a speed of 5 to 10 kilometers per hour. It is forecast to gradually approach coastal areas from Guangxi to the western Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong Province.

The NMC has urged local authorities to take precautionary measures and prepare for the potential impact of the severe weather.

China uses a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system, with red indicating the highest level of danger, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
