KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called on CPN-UML leaders to actively participate in the upcoming House of Representatives elections, slated for 5 March 2026, reassuring them of the government’s commitment to holding the polls on schedule.

During a meeting with senior UML figures at her Baluwatar residence on Thursday, PM Karki emphasized that the electoral timeline would be upheld and urged the main opposition to fully engage in the process.

UML leader Mahesh Bartaula said the party is ready to contest the elections once a “conducive and secure environment” is ensured. He noted that the UML, despite facing long-standing political challenges, has consistently stood in favour of democratic principles and public scrutiny through elections.

Bartaula added that the party expects the government to address concerns related to security and electoral integrity. He also pointed out that key political issues including matters linked to parliamentary reinstatement would become clearer once the Supreme Court completes its constitutional review.

Following the talks, Minister for Information and Communications Technology Jagadish Kharel said the Prime Minister formally requested UML’s participation, and the visiting leaders assured her they would not “shy away” from the polls if fairness and impartiality are guaranteed. According to Kharel, the discussion helped ease several doubts surrounding the election process.

The UML delegation comprised General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali and youth leader Mahesh Bartaula.
