Kathmandu, Sept 14 – Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki has instructed top government officials to work with a commitment to end corruption, ensure good governance, and promote economic equality, in line with the aspirations of Nepal’s younger generation.

Speaking at Singha Durbar after taking the oath of office, PM Karki stated that her objective is to serve the public rather than enjoy power. She emphasized that the interim government will hold elections within six months and hand over responsibilities to a newly elected parliament.

“The circumstances under which this interim government was formed are known to all,” PM Karki said. “The country has suffered significant loss of lives and property. Records and documents of key institutions have been destroyed, vehicles of security agencies have been burned, and essential infrastructures were attacked in a targeted manner. These incidents must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible must face legal action.”

She further highlighted the need to focus on compensation and reconstruction using available national resources and called for unity in facing the situation. During a visit to Maharajgunj, local business representatives pledged to rebuild the police station that was burned during recent unrest.

Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal briefed that government offices and security buildings in several districts have been damaged, presenting challenges to service delivery. He stressed that reconstruction must be prioritized and budgeted for accordingly.

Prime Minister Karki was appointed on September 12 as the head of the interim government, following the protests organized by the “Gen Z” group on September 8 and 9. The oath-taking ceremony was held at the newly constructed Home Ministry building.
