US technology stocks suffered a sharp sell-off on Thursday after the Democratic Party secured sweeping victories in the 2026 midterm elections, raising concerns among investors that tighter regulations could slow the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite plunged 5.56 percent on Thursday, marking its steepest single-day decline in 19 months. The index fell into correction territory, closing nearly 12 percent below its record high reached in October.

The sell-off wiped out an estimated $2.5 trillion in Nasdaq market value, according to market reports. The broader S&P 500 declined 4.4 percent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,833 points, or 3.4 percent.

Investors have become concerned that Democrats’ gains in both chambers of Congress and state governments could lead to stricter oversight of AI companies, tighter data privacy requirements and restrictions on the construction of large data centres.

Several Democratic candidates campaigned on addressing the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, including concerns over electricity consumption, environmental impacts and rising energy costs for local communities.

The technology and semiconductor sectors were among the hardest hit. Nvidia shares fell 9.3 percent, while Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plunged 17.3 percent. Companies involved in data-centre infrastructure also recorded substantial losses.

The market reaction followed an initial post-election rally on Wednesday, when investors had welcomed the prospect of a divided government and potentially limited legislative changes.

However, Thursday’s sharp reversal reflected growing concerns about the future of AI investment and the possibility that political opposition could slow the construction of data centres and reduce demand for chips and related services.

The election results have therefore introduced fresh uncertainty into a technology sector that has been a major driver of US stock market gains in 2026.
