KATHMANDU: Journalist Dipendra Sharma’s book Yuddha Patrakarita (War Journalism) was unveiled on Friday at an event held at Samwad Dabali. National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal formally released the book.
Speaking at the program, Dahal said the book captures the courageous and unparalleled role played by people’s journalists during the decade-long People’s War. “The coordination of the gun and the pen, and the mixture of gunpowder and ink, forms the very foundation of a modern republic,” he said, recalling his own experience of working as a journalist during the conflict.
Dahal noted that Nepal’s political transformation was made possible not only by journalists directly participating in the insurgency but also by those working in mainstream media who contributed in different ways.
Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) President Nirmala Sharma remarked that journalism practiced during the People’s War was ‘mission journalism’, adding that this spirit continues in Nepali society even today.
Similarly, Maheshwar Dahal highlighted that war journalism became more widespread during the Maoist insurgency and stressed the need to institutionalized and document its practices.
Author Sharma said many journalists, including himself, were actively engaged in war journalism during the conflict period, and that the book aims to document their contributions and experiences from that era.
