Kathmandu: Egypt secured their first ever victory at a FIFA World Cup overturning an early deficit to defeat New Zealand 3-1 and climb to the top of Group G.
New Zealand took a surprise lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman powered home a header from Tim Payne’s assist. The Kiwis held their advantage until the second half but Egypt mounted a strong comeback.
Mostafa Ziko equalized in the 58th minute with a header off Mohamed Hany’s delivery. Just nine minutes later, Mohamed Salah put Egypt ahead finishing smartly after being set up by Ziko.
Substitute Trezeguet sealed the win in the 82nd minute nodding in a precise cross from Salah just six minutes after coming off the bench in the 76th minute.
Egypt’s strong position at the summit of Group G gives them momentum and a buffer as the group stage progresses. The result not only delivers a historic milestone for Egyptian football but also places them as clear favorites to advance from the group.
