Kathmandu: The 12th International Day of Yoga is being celebrated across Nepal and around the world today under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting the role of yoga in promoting physical, mental and emotional well being throughout all stages of life.
Various yoga related programs, mass demonstrations, awareness campaigns and wellness activities were organized in different parts of Nepal to mark the occasion. The theme emphasizes the importance of maintaining health, independence and quality of life as people grow older.
According to the World Health Organization, yoga is an effective practice for supporting healthy ageing. Through a combination of gentle movements, stretching exercises, breathing techniques and mindfulness, yoga helps improve balance, flexibility, strength and mobility while reducing stress and enhancing mental health.
Health experts note that yoga can be adapted to suit different fitness levels and health conditions, making it accessible to a wide range of people, including older adults. The practice contributes to reducing the risk of falls, promoting independence and encouraging active and healthy lifestyles.
These benefits align closely with the goals of the World Health Organization Decade of Healthy Ageing, which seeks to improve the lives of older people by promoting person centered health and well-being approaches.
Yoga, which has its roots in ancient Himalayan and Eastern traditions, encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions. Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “to join” or “to unite,” yoga symbolizes the harmony between the body and mind. Today, it is practiced worldwide in various forms and continues to gain popularity across cultures and age groups.
The global observance of International Yoga Day began after the United Nations adopted a resolution on December 11, 2014, declaring June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
The proposal was introduced by Narendra Modi during the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, where he highlighted yoga as a timeless practice beneficial to humanity.
The initiative received broad international support, including backing from the then Prime Minister of Nepal, Sushil Koirala and numerous member states. Since then, International Yoga Day has grown into a worldwide movement promoting health, wellness and mindfulness.
As celebrations continue across the globe, advocates say yoga remains a simple yet powerful tool for fostering healthier, more active and fulfilling lives for people of all ages.
