KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has proposed a new financial partnership model with other local governments to help extend the lifespan of the Bancharedanda landfill site and ensure its long-term sustainability.
The initiative aims to promote scientific waste management by reducing the volume of waste reaching the landfill through waste segregation at the source.
Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol said KMC has intensified efforts to implement source-level waste segregation to ease pressure on the landfill.
“KMC currently spends around Rs 1 billion annually on the landfill site, related infrastructure, and social development programmes in the surrounding area.
Our priority is to reduce the amount of waste reaching the landfill by ensuring proper segregation at the source,” Dangol said.
KMC Ready to Bear 50 Percent of the Cost
Under the proposed model, KMC expects other municipalities that use the Bancharedanda landfill to contribute financially based on the volume of waste they generate.
Dangol said the arrangement would encourage local governments to take greater responsibility for the waste they produce. Since Kathmandu generates the largest share of waste, the metropolis is prepared to bear around 50 percent of the total financial responsibility, she added.
Focus on Sustainable Waste Management
The metropolitan city has also initiated discussions with stakeholders on promoting waste segregation, reuse, and recycling to reduce landfill dependency and improve long-term waste management.
As part of these efforts, KMC recently held consultations with officials from the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, including Director General Engineer Rabindra Bohara, as well as representatives from the Environment Management Department, to explore modern technologies and strategies for extending the operational life of the Bancharedanda landfill site.
At present, the Bancharedanda landfill receives municipal waste from Kathmandu Valley as well as several local governments in Kavrepalanchok, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts.
