KATHMANDU: Nepal is observing the 20th Loktantra Diwas today with various programs across the country, including tributes to the martyrs who sacrificed their precious lives for democratic and republican movements.

The day commemorates the historic political transformation achieved through the 19-day People’s Movement of 2006 (2062/63 BS), which played a crucial role in restoring democracy and ending absolute monarchy in Nepal.

The movement was jointly called by the Seven Party Alliance and the then rebel Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). It marked a turning point in the country’s political history, ultimately leading to the reinstatement of the dissolved House of Representatives by then King Gyanendra Shah.

Following sustained peaceful protests and a 12-point agreement between the political parties and the Maoists, Nepal entered a new political era. The changes paved the way for the election of a Constituent Assembly, through which the people drafted their own constitution.

Despite significant political achievements, concerns remain as the state has yet to fully address several basic needs of the general public.

Democracy Day is observed every year to honor the struggles, sacrifices and achievements of the Nepali people in their journey toward democratic governance.
