KATHMANDU: Nepal’s House of Representatives is set to elect its new Speaker on April 4, following cross-party discussions held at Singha Durbar on Tuesday.

Leaders agreed that nominations for the Speaker post will be filed on April 2, with the vote and swearing in scheduled for the same day, according to lawmakers who attended the meeting.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Khushbu Oli told reporters that the process will move quickly, with both the election and assumption of office planned for April 4.

Another RSP Lawmaker, Kabindra Burlakoti, said his party is confident it will secure the Speaker’s position. “Based on our numbers, it is clear the Speaker will be from our party,” he said, though he did not comment on the Deputy Speaker role.

There is growing speculation that RSP’s DP Aryal could be nominated for the post but no official announcement has been made yet.
