KATHMANDU: Bir Hospital, the country’s oldest medical institution, has begun simultaneous testing for multiple respiratory viruses through its Medical Genetics Laboratory.
According to Dr. Nilam Thakur, Chief of the Department of Medical Genetics, the facility can now test for 10 different respiratory-related viruses at once, marking a significant step forward in diagnostic capacity.
Dr. Thakur said the advancement will help reduce testing costs and allow for early detection and treatment of respiratory illnesses. The hospital is also equipped to provide necessary treatment for any conditions identified through these tests.
Although the Medical Genetics Laboratory was established in 2073 BS, it had been operating below capacity due to a shortage of equipment and skilled manpower.
Currently, only three personnel are managing the lab, which remains the first government-run facility in Nepal to offer genetic health testing services.
In addition to respiratory virus tests, Bir Hospital has also introduced simultaneous testing for six viruses linked to brain infections, according to officials.
