KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has issued a warning of a moderate risk of flash floods in several districts across Nepal as heavy rainfall is expected on Wednesday.
The department has urged people, particularly those living near small rivers and streams, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against possible flooding.
According to the latest weather forecast, heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the hilly and southern plains of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. One or two locations in Madhesh Province may also receive intense rainfall.
The DHM said the country remains under the influence of monsoon winds. The monsoon trough is currently positioned south of its normal location over eastern Nepal and near its average position in the western region, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.
DHM flood expert Binod Parajuli said water levels in small rivers and streams in Ilam, Jhapa, Tehrathum, Panchthar, Dhankuta, Saptari, Sunsari, Morang, Doti and Dadeldhura districts, as well as nearby areas, are expected to rise significantly, increasing the risk of flash floods.
The department advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel near rivers and streams, and follow updates issued by authorities.
Meanwhile, most parts of the country recorded light to moderate rainfall over the past 24 hours. Yanjakot in Kaski district received the highest rainfall during the period, measuring 98.6 millimetres, according to the DHM.
