KATHMANDU: The reconstruction of the historic Gahana Pokhari in HadiGaun is progressing swiftly, according to Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

The project, being implemented under the city’s Heritage Conservation and Urban Development Programme, seeks to restore the pond and its surrounding structures in their original architectural style. Work formally began after the completion of a traditional religious ritual, Kshama Puja.

Municipal officials say the restoration is expected to cost between Rs 5.2 million and Rs 5.5 million, with a focus on preserving the site’s authentic character. In addition to the pond itself, the project includes wider pedestrian walkways, traditional balustrades, expanded green and child-friendly spaces, and tourist assistance centres.

Once completed, the metropolitan city believes Gahana Pokhari will emerge as a more vibrant heritage destination, reinforcing its religious, cultural and tourism value.
