KATHMANDU: Nepal is likely to experience widespread rainfall and snowfall from Thursday as Cyclone Arnab, developing over the Bay of Bengal, moves toward India’s eastern coast, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).

The weather system is expected to begin influencing Nepal from Thursday, with its effects likely to intensify on Friday and Saturday. Several parts of the country could experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.

Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces are expected to be among the areas most affected. Moderate rainfall is forecast in many places, while some locations could receive heavy rainfall. Parts of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces may also experience rain and thunderstorms.

The DHM has warned that heavy snowfall, snowstorms and avalanches are possible in high-hill and Himalayan areas. It has therefore urged tourists and trekkers to avoid high-altitude destinations during the adverse weather period and advised those already in affected areas to remain in safe locations.

Farmers have also been advised to complete the harvesting and storage of paddy crops before the weather deteriorates. The warning comes as farmers in many parts of the country are preparing to bring in their ripening paddy.

The weather system could also affect major river basins. The DHM expects water levels to rise in the Narayani, Koshi, Bagmati and Kamala river systems from Thursday, with flows potentially approaching warning and vigilance thresholds during Friday and Saturday.

The department has also warned of possible flash floods, waterlogging and landslides in vulnerable hilly, Chure and Tarai areas. Road and air transportation could also be affected by heavy rain, snowfall and poor visibility.

Cyclone Arnab is forecast to make landfall near Yanam, between Andhra Pradesh and Visakhapatnam in India, on Wednesday before gradually weakening as it moves inland. Its influence over Nepal is expected to decrease from Saturday night.
